Act Five Flashcards

1
Q

Katherina asking Petruchio to kiss her after he threatens to walk all the way back to Verona. Could be her pleading with him and trying to soothe his temper, or could be a fondly exasperated reaction to his strange behaviour (possible she knows that he has no intention of doing anything if she doesn’t kiss him - knows she’s in a comedy)

A

“I will give thee a kiss; now pray, love, stay”

Q

Bianca, replying to Lucentio’s demand that she sit next to him. Demonstrates that Bianca is not as innocent as the men present her to be and she is just as misunderstood as Katherina. She has already disobeyed her father and eloped with Lucentio. Defies the expectation of a wife being obedient to her husband

A

“Am I your bird? I mean to shift my bush”

Q

Petruchio, now having fully “tamed” Katherina. Could be mocking the idea that he and Katherina will ever get along, showing that his “taming” has ultimately not worked. Could also be an expression of his arrogance (comedic villains do not necessarily have to learn a lesson by the end of the play)

A

“Peace it bodes, and love, and quiet life”

Q

Katherina, telling the other wives how to treat their marriages. Could be an earnest expression of obedience and a demonstration of how Petruchio has successfully “tamed” her. Could also be sarcastic, poking fun at the men who genuinely believe this sentiment

A

“Thy husband is thy lord, thy life, thy keeper”
