Cassio Flashcards
Tis my breeding that gives me this bold show of courtesy
Cassio is of a flirtatious and confident nature, he is different to the Venetians
An inviting eye.. and yet me thinks right modest
Cassio has respect for Des, a high class woman (but not Bianca), also shows strength he had before Iago’s manipulation
O let the heavens give him defence against the elements, for I have lost him on a dangerous sea
Use of hyperbolic language to show great admiration for Othello and his melodramatic nature
I have poor and unhappy brains for drinking
Cassio offers Iago his weakness, shows his trust and Iago’s cruelty
Zounds! You rogue, you rascal!
Drunk Cassio is a stark contrast to when sober, showing the easy transformation/facade
I love thee but never more be officer of mine
Cassio represents high class and culture, in firing him Othello abandons this for Iago’s direction - first evidence of his effects
Reputation, reputation, reputation!
Cassio’s fatal weakness is his obsession with acceptance and title, this becomes clear to Iago so he can manipulate it
I have lost the immortal part of myself, and what remains is bestial
Cassio believes he is just an animal without his title, shows how important class was and being remembered
He hath achieved a maid that paragons description and wild frame
Cassio objectifies Des and sees her as a prize, begins his theme of misogyny
The riches of the ship is come on shore!
Cassio is emphatic in his admiration of Des, inspires Iago early and shows his culture
Oh thou invisible spirit of wine, if thou hast no name to be known by, let us call the devil
In cursing alcohol as the devil, Cassio aligns Iago with the devil/evil
Oh God that men should put an enemy in their mouths to steal away their brains.! that we should.. transform ourselves into beasts
Cassio curses his drunkenness, calls Iago then enemy, and personifies himself as an animal (bestial)
I do beseech you that by your virtuous means I may exist
Cassio asks for Des’ help in getting his job back, likens having his reputation to having existence
I do attend here on the general, i think it no addition, nor my wish, to have him see me woman’d
Cassio dismisses Bianca as she threatens his reputation with Othello, commitment to women is seen as weakness
I marry her! What? A customer!
Cassio’s scornful disrespect for Bianca shows his misogyny and carelessness
