How did the Front lines shift between 1914 and 1918? Why is this important?

In 1914 there was very little movement of the front lines. But as the war went on to 1918, it was very prevalent that there was a incredible increase in front lines (lots of movement).

This is important because it showcases that as the war progressed there was a greater need for trenches.
