7.4 Refraction: Air and Water Flashcards
What is refraction?
Refraction is the phenomena where light travelling through media of different densities, changes its speed and hence bends or deviates from its original path.
What is the angle of refraction?
The angle of refraction is the angle between the normal at the point of incidence and the refracted ray.
What is the emergent ray?
An emergent ray seems to be a refracted beam that originates from a medium after refraction.
What are the rules of refraction?
Rules of Refraction -
1. Light passing from a rarer medium to a denser medium bends towards the normal.
2. Light passing from a denser medium to a rarer medium bands away from the normal.
What is a perpendicular?
A perpendicular is the shortest distance between a light and a point.
What is optical density?
Optical density is the density of a medium which is experienced by light.
What is apparent depth? What is real depth?
Apparent depth is the depth of an object’s image which is in a medium whereas the real depth is the actual depth of an object.
What does the speed of light in different materials depend on?
The speed of light in different materials depends on the density of that material.
What is the formula for the refractive index? What does higher or lower refractive index mean?
The formula for refractive index is n=c/v
The higher the refractive index of an object, the more the light is refracted.
