Meiosis (the better deck) Flashcards

1
Q

What is different between sexual reproduction and asexual reproduction?

A
  • Sexual reproduction produces genetic variety, while the cells from asexual reproduction are genetically identical.
  • Offspring are produced from two parents in sexual reproduction, and one parent in asexual reproduction.

Q

Does mitosis produce haploid cells, or meiosis? And why?

A

Meiosis.

Meiosis produces sex cells, which must have half the number of chromosomes, or be haploid. Also, through metaphase I, tetrads line up along the metaphase plate, rather than the homologous chromosomes. This is how cells only get half.

Q

How many haploid cells does Meiosis I produce, and why?

A

Meiosis I produces two haploid cells, because only one instance of cytokinesis occurs.

Q

How many haploid cells does Meiosis II produce, and why?

Q

What is crossing over?

A

Homologous recombination of alleles, which occurs during synapsis (AKA when the chromosomes are paired).

Q

What makes meiosis different from mitosis?

A

Meiosis is a form of reduction division, meaning that the daughter cells of the parent cells only have half of the chromosomes.
