Q

What is the multi store model

A

States that there are three memory stores and each has different encoding, capacity and duration. Information moves between these stores through either attention or rehearsal.

Q

What is the first stage of the multi store model

A

Hthe sensory memory holds information from the senses for a short time and has a large capacity (because all the info passes through all 5 senses). Paying attention to information transfers it to the STM.

Q

Short term memory in multi store model

A

Temporary memory store with a limited capacity of between five and nine items or chunks of information, lasting up to 30 seconds. Coding tends to be acoustic

Q

Role of repetition

A

Verbal repetition (rehearsal) keeps information in STM.
If information is rehearsed for long enough it is transferred into LTM.

Q

Long Term Memory in the Multi Store Model

A

Coding tends to be semantic
Capacity is potentially unlimited
Duration is potentially a life time

Q

Name a strength of the multi store model

A

A strength is that there is support for the existence of different memory stores.
Baddeley’s study of encoding shows that STM and LTM encode information differently. For example we tend to mix up words that have similar sounds in STM (acoustic) but similar meaning in our LTM (semantic)
This shows the two types of memory have qualitative differences.

Q

Name 2 weaknesses of the multi store model

A

A weakness is the model is too simple as it suggests we only have one STM and one LTM.
Research shows STM is divided into visual and acoustic stores, and LTM into episodic, semantic and procedural memory.
So, memory is more complex than the model proposes.

A weakness is that research that supports it used artificial materials.
For example, word lists or nonsense syllables like SPR or LMJ
This means that the results would not illustrate all the different ways we use memory.
