Highly Protestant, influenced by Calvinist and Lutheran ideas
However, never actually became law due to death of Edward
Religious changes of 1553?
Short catechism produced to make the learning of England’s new religious beliefs easier
Example of social impact of religious change?
People less likely to leave money to parish churches (70% of Northern wills gave money to the church in 1540-46, but this went down to 32% in Edward’s reign)
Plays and festivals stopped
‘England WAS Protestant by the end of Edward’s reign’
Removal of Catholicism (chantries closed, images removed and alters replaced etc…)
Ceremonies changed (2nd BCP removed sign of the cross in confirmation)
Doctrine changed (2nd BCP did not acknowledge transub)
‘England was NOT Protestant by the end of Edward’s reign’
Brevity of the reign!!! - NL could change the ceremonies and doctrine, but the reign was too short to change people’s beliefs (however, the fact that Mary had difficulty bringing back Catholicism shows success in Edward’s reign)
