KA5- SYMBIOSIS Flashcards
what are the 2 types of symbiosis?
- parasitism
- mutualism
What is symbiosis?
A relationship between 2 different species in direct contact with one another
mutualism
both organisms benefit from this relationship (+/+)
interdepend on one another and benefit from their relationship
parasitism
the parasite benefits at the expense of the host who is often damaged (+/-)
describe the relationship between host and parasite
stable as the parasite cannot survive without host due to their limited metabolism
name the types of parasites
(inside and outside)
endoparasites
ectoparasites
what are the 3 ways parasites are transmitted?
- direct contact
- release of resistant stages
- use of a vector
what does release of resistant stages mean?
a stage in the life cycle that can withstand adverse enviromental conditions until they come into contact with a new host
what does the use of a vector mean?
using another animal to carry the parasite to its host
example is a mosquitoe
describe parasitic life cycles
can include more than one host
