C13 Flashcards
How was the earths early atmosphere formed?
Volcanic activity
What made up earths early atmosphere?
Mainly carbon dioxide, nitrogen and water vapour, and traces of methane and ammonia
What caused levels of oxygen in the atmosphere to increase?
Plants being spread
Name 2 reasons why the percentage of carbon dioxide decreased in the atmosphere?
Photosynthesis by algae and plants and formation of sedimentary rocks
How was ammonia and methane removed from the earths atmosphere?
Reacting with oxygen after it was formed by photosynthesis
What makes up the earths atmosphere today?
Nitrogen, oxygen, carbon dioxide, water vapour and noble gases
Why has the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere recently increased?
Burning of fossil fuels
How can we reduce levels of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere?
By using alternative sources of embers and conserving energy
What are risks of global climate change?
Sea levels rising, threats to ecosystems and different patterns of food production around the world
What happens when hydrocarbon fuels are burnt in plenty of air?
The carbon and hydrogen in the fuel are completely oxidised, this results in carbon dioxide being produced and water
What can sulfur impurities in fuels cause?
Acid rain
What does changing the conditions in which hydrocarbon fuels are burnt do?
Change the products made
