What are the advantages of random sampling ?
It is the only sampling method that ensures we have gained a sample in a totally unbiased way
What is an opportunity sample ?
Where you pick those who are available at the time of the study.
what are the disadvantages of self selected volunteer sample ?
Majority of people are unlikely to respond
Biased sample - thise who respond may be a certain type of person e.g they may be more conforming to have replied and so might show more demand characteristics
What are the advantages of stratified samples ?
The sample is proportionate to the population so it is representative
a random sample is used so so it is fairly unbiased
What is event sampling ?
Counting the number of times a behavioir from a behavioural category occurs in the whole of the observation
What is a systematic sample ?
A participant is chosen at every interval . Every nth person
What is the disadvantage of a systematic sample ?
It is not truly random
What is a self selected / volunteer sample ?
The participants select themselves eg replying to an advert
what is the advantage of a systematic sample?
Fairly unbiased
What are the disadvantages of a stratified sample ?
Time consuming
expensive
What Is the disadvantage of random sampling ?
The group we end up with may be unrepresentative by chance .
eg if it was an experiment on memory the sample may be full of people with reallly good memory
What are the advantages of an opportunity sample ?
It is easier to get a sample
widely used in psychology researches tend to use the students at the university where they work
What is a stratified sample ?
Proportionate to those in the population
What is the disadvantage of an opportunity sample ?
A high chance of bias the researcher may chose people they want.
What is random sampling ?
every person in the sample has an equal chance of being selected
