Definition of bed making?
It is the act of arranging the bed sheets in the bed and prepare it for use.
Purpose of bed making?
- To prevent the spread of pathogens in the patient’s environment.
- To prevent pressure ulcers/bed sores.
- To prevent cross contamination
General guidelines of bed making?
- wash your hands before and after procedure
- explain the procedure for cooperation
- don’t expose the client
Infection control in bed making?
- Use gloves.
- When folding it should be away from your body
Types of bed?
( O2C3FAP)
Open bed - the patient can easily go back since the top sheet is open
Occupied bed - the bed is occupied or the patient is in it.
Closed bed - the bed is closed and it can be a reserve bed when there’s a new patient.
Cradle bed - this bed is used for skin sensitive patients or patients with burns. (The top sheet is loose in the patient’s lower limbs)
Cardiac bed - used for a patient with heart disease. The bed is 30-45 degrees fowler’s position for lung expansion
Fracture bed - used for patients with fracture.
Amputation bed - Used for patients with amputated leg
Postoperative bed - bed that it is used after surgery.
Materials for bed making?
- Gloves - for protection
- Bottom sheet - to hold the mattress not to slip away
- Rubber sheet/ mackintosh - water proof plastic that protects the bottom sheet.
- Draw sheet - it cover the mackintosh or rubber sheet.
- Top sheet - it covers the patient.
- Pillow - to provide comfort
- Pillow case - it covers the pillow
Materials for disinfecting?
- basin
- washcloth
- dinsifectant
