Circulatory System Flashcards
What is the circulatory system made up of
Heart, blood vessels and blood
What does the right ventricle do
Pump deoxygenated blood to the lungs
What does the left ventricle do
Pump oxygenated blood around the body
What do valves do
Prevent back flow
What does the pulmonary vein do
Pump oxygenated blood into the left atrium
What does the vena cava do
Pump deoxygenated blood into the right atrium
What happens when the atria contact
Blood is forced into the ventricles
What happens when the left ventricle contracts
Blood is forced through the aorta
What happens when the right ventricle contracts
Blood is forced through the pulmonary artery
How is oxygenated blood supplied to the heart muscles
Through pulmonary arteries that branch off the aorta and surround the heart
What is a pacemaker and how does it work
A group of cells in the right atrium walls that controls the resting heart rate
These cells produce electrical impulses which spread to surrounding muscles causing them to contract
What is an artificial pacemaker and how does it work
A device that’s planted under the skin and has a wire leading to the heart
Produces electrical impulses to keep the heart beating regularly
What do arteries do
Pump oxygenated blood away from the heart
What do capillaries do
Carry blood really close to cells to supply food and oxygen and take away CO2
What do veins do
Carey deoxygenated blood to the heart
