How does having a poor farming land impact development?
Some countries have land that is steep or that has poor soil much food can be produced. This means farmers have less to sell so the government gain less money from taxes
How does having fewer raw material like coal and oil impact development?
-this means they have fewer products to export to other countries meaning they make less money so cannot spend as much on development projects
How do natural disasters impact development?
-countries that have a lot of natural disasters have to spend money on rebuilding after the disasters occur
-this reduces the quality of life for people impacted and also reduced the money the government has to spend on development projects
What economic factors can cause uneven development?
-poor trade links
-lots of debt
-an economy based on primary products
How do poor trade links impact development?
If a country has poor trade links it won’t make a lot of money so will have less to spend on development projects
How does debt cause uneven development?
very poor countries may have to borrow money from others which had to be paid back sometimes with interest. This would leave less money for development
How does having an economy based on primary products lead to uneven development?
countries that mostly export primary products tend to be less developed as primary products are sold for less profit then manufactured goods limiting the amount of money they earn so there is less for development projects

-conflict
-colonisation
How does colonisation impact development?
-countries that were colonised are often at a lower development level when they gain independence than they would have been if they hadn’t been colonised
-this is because coloniser removed raw materials and sold back manufactured goods meaning all profits went to the colonisers and not the colonised countries increasing inequality
How does conflict lead to uneven development?
war can slow and reduce development as money is spent on arms and on training spillers instead of development. Services such as healthcare and education are also disrupted which ca lead to a decline in literacy rates and increases infant mortality
What are the consequences of uneven development?
- the wealth people earn can impact their standard of living - the wealthy can afford services and goods that make their life more convenient while the less wealthy cannot
-LICs have a lack of adequate healthcare meaning people die from diseases that could easily be treated in HICs . This also means infant mortality in LICs is higher
-many people from LICs and NEEs move to HICs to escape conflict or improve quality of life. This means migrant workers contribute to the economies of HICs instead of the LICs they leave increasing the development gap further
