Mass, density and volume Flashcards

1
Q

Define matter and mass.

2 marks

A

Matter is anything that takes up space and has mass. The mass of a body is how much matter it contains.

2
Q

Distinguish between mass and weight; include units.

4 marks

A

Mass is the total amount of matter in an object, whereas weight is the force of gravity on an object. Mass is measured in grams (g) and kilograms (kg) and weight is measured in Newtons (N).

Q

How can the volume of an irregular object be measured? Describe the experiment.

4 marks

A
  1. Fill a Eureka can (or displacement can) up to the point where the water just touches the lip of the spout but does not pour out.
  2. Position a measuring cylinder underneath the spout.
  3. Lower the irregular object into the Eureka can.
  4. The object will displace some of the water in the can, causing it to flow into the measuring cylinder. The volume of the object is the reading on the measuring cylinder.

Q

How does density differ in solids, liquids and gases?

3 marks

A
  1. Solids have the highest density
  2. Liquids have a density lower than solids but higher than gases
  3. Gases have the lowest density

Q

What is the Density/Mass/Volume triangle?

1 mark

A

Mass = Density x Volume

M = D x V
D = M / V
V = M / D
