What is gel electrophoresis?
A
Gel electrophoresis is a technique used to separate nucleic acid fragments (and proteins) based on their mass.

How does gel electrophoresis work?
A
The electric current pulls the negatively charged DNA fragments towards the positive end of the gel. The smallest fragments move the furthest.
The process is accurate enough to separate fragments that differ in length by only one base.
