- in 2021/22, the majority of the prison population were male (96%) and 4% female, this proportion has reminaed stable for the last 5 years
- in 2021/22, 85% of all arrests were men and 15% were women
how are women underrepresented in the cjs?
they make up 27% of police, 23% of the judiciary and 15% of sernior police

women are most commonly the victims of crimes by someone they know
by self-report, a greater proportion of women were victims of violence (7%) than men (?)

- shoplifting is the most common offence for women
- drunk and disordly behaviour is the most common offence for men
- 10% of men were sentenced to immediate custody in 2011, compared to 3% of women
- the average length of a prison sentence is 17.7 months for men and 11.6 months for women

ann oakley - argued boys and girls socialised into different behaviours. for boys it is accepted that they will be loud, boisterous, aggressive, tough, etc. girls are expected to be passive, quiet, helpful etc.
this is reflected in levels of convictiosn for violence, assault, street crime etc. males commit more of these crimes than females
