Respiration and metabolism Flashcards
What is respiration?
A chemical reaction which occurs in all living cells, releasing energy from glucose.
What are 3 examples of how organisms use the energy transferred by respiration?
- To build up larger molecules from smaller ones.
- For muscle contraction.
- So mammals and birds can keep a stable body temperature.
What is the word equation for respiration?
Glucose + Oxygen -> Carbon dioxide + Water
What is the balanced symbol equation for respiration?
C6H12O6 + 6O2 -> 6CO2 + 6H2O
What is metabolism?
The sum of all the chemical reactions in a cell or the body.
What is aerobic respiration?
Respiration that takes place in the presence of oxygen.
What is anaerobic respiration?
Respiration that takes place in the absence of oxygen.
What is the word equation for anaerobic respiration in muscle cells?
Glucose -> Lactic acid
Why doesn’t anaerobic respiration transfer as much energy as aerobic respiration?
Because the glucose isn’t fully oxidised.
When might anaerobic respiration be used?
During periods of intense exercise.
What is anaerobic respiration in yeast cells called?
Fermentation.
What is the word equation for fermentation?
Glucose -> Ethanol + Carbon dioxide
What is fermentation used for in the food and drinks industry?
Making bread and alcoholic drinks.
What are some examples of metabolic reactions?
- Small glucose molecules joining together to form starch, glycogen or cellulose.
- Lipid molecules made from 1 glycerol molecule and 3 fatty acids.
