Q

What discovery did Ernest Rutherford make, and what model did he come up with?

A

The atom is mostly empty space with a tiny, dense, positively-charged nucleus. He came up with the nuclear model to show his findings. 1909

Q

What experiment did Rutherford carry out?

A

Gold foil experiment. He fired Alpha particles at thin gold foil, some deflected slightly or went straight through the sheet but some deflected backwards proving that the plum pudding model couldn’t be correct.

Q

What discovery did Niels Bohr make?

A

Electrons orbit the nucleus on shells. If they were in a ‘cloud’ as suggested by Rutherford it would cause the atom to collapse. So electrons orbit on a shell which is a fixed distance from the nucleus

Q

Why do group 1 elements become more reactive as you go down the group?

A

The outer electron is further away from the nucleus, So less strongly attracted to the nucleus + is lost more easily
