A class or type of film that share a set of narrative, stylistic, and thematic characteristics or conventions.
Genre
A group films within a given genre that share their own specific set of conventions that differentiate them from other films in the genre. Smaller clusters of films in which
additional conventions come in play.
Subgenre
Stories where the protagonist never dies.
Comedy
Stories where the protagonist dies.
Tragedy
Films that have a thematic interest in the relationship between technology and humanity.
Science Fiction
A genre that focuses on characters who are down and out.
Film Noir
Films that integrate character-driven romances with visual and aural sensation.
Musical
Films that show characters who do not need an audience to make music.
Integrated Musical
Films that either feature a male hero who helps restore the law or that portray the bloody struggle between Native Americans and settlers.
Western
A category of narrative fiction intended to be more serious than humorous in tone though it can be a comedy.
Drama
Film that provide audiences with a visceral thrill.
Action Film
Films that have monsters and victims.
Horror
A sexually provocative and dangerous woman willing to lie and use her seductive wiles to exploit others to her advantage.
Femme Fatale
A genre film that radically modifies accepted genre conventions for dramatic effect.
Revisionist
Independent films made by or for black audiences.
