Traffic solutions (6) Mumbai
-Mumbai Urban Transport Project, improved railways, new road links, cameras to monitor traffic, eco buses, flyovers, effective but people living new railways in slums walk on the tracks slowing the trains down, less cars on the road, people needed to relocate due to building
-Bandra-Worli sea link, it’s a bridge that connects 2 parts of the city, effective cut down travel time, but you have to pay to use the bridge and bottlenecks often
-Skywalks, above ground bridges for people, effective keeps people of the roads and encourages public transport. Very successful but not as many areas covered as planned
-monorail- above ground railway, not polluting. Effective as now a large area had to be cleared cause it’s in the air, kept communities together, inconvenient as it doesn’t go directly to the CBD
Mumbai Metro rapid transit system, designed to reduce traffic and supplement the overcrowded trains.
-car pooling eg BlaBla Car. People not keen to travel with strangers, it has popularity though
- Mumbai trans harbour link. Sea bridge connects Mumbai to navi Mumbai, cut journey times, fuel uses and reduces air pollution, effective not really been very expensive to build and delayed due to covid but it is good when it runs smoothly
Housing solutions (7) mumbai
-slum rehabilitation- better standards of water sanitation etc. But authorities can keep up with the growing shanty towns and they are slow to do so
-tarred pathways- open sewers are covered and rubbish truck can get into areas. Effective as it has stopped disease and improved hygiene but the streets are already very narrow so the trucks can’t get down it anyways
-encourage residents to form cooperatives to organise themselves or get bank loans effective as it has built a sense of community
-dharavi redevelopment project- high rise apartments are built with good standards near shops and schools but it breaks up communities
- self help schemes- basic foundations for building a house instead of using scrap metal also allows residents to officially live there and have a tenure/tenants/landlords. Effective as it’s giving people a variety of houses and cheap materials and land rights. Sense of community
-slum clearance- slums are bulldozed- but people just move to another area and build again.
-development of navi Mumbai- removes overcrowding and congestion, successful as people have moved there with ease and soaring land values in Mumbai bring in more business to navi Mumbai. Failure as it has had a lack for funding for amenities and many jobs where created for people with high skill sets and unskilled workers didn’t want to move there. Some people straight up just didn’t want to move away from the fam or community.
