What was the Sacheverell Sermon and trial 1709?
DR Henry Sacheverell was put on trial for preaching against the Whigs and the Hanoverian succession
His speeches were published and 100,000 copies sold
His trial resulted in Torie riots
He was found guilty but had a mild sentence so there were no more riots
He was banned from preaching and all his sermons burnt
Why were there Torie riots 1710?
In response to the Sacheverell Trial
They went through London burning dissenter churches and threatened to burn down the Bank of England

What was the Tack 1710?
An attempt by Tories to pass a bill against Occasional Communion. The Bill kept being defeated so they put it on the end of an important money bill
This failed and the bill was defeated by the Whigs

Any dissenter only taking communion once a year would be dismissed from office
What was the Schism Act 1714?
Any dissenter schools would be fined if they didn’t get permission to teach from the Bishop

The Whigs they benefited from government contracts and wanted to help their European allies
