What did the crime control involve?
Freud seeing his patients 5 times a week, he brought these unconscious conflicts and repressed emotions into the conscious mind so they can be resolved
What did Freud use in order to access the unconscious mind?
hypnosis and free association where the analyst gives the patient a word and they respond with the first word that comes into their mind
Who is Aichhorn?
he applied psychanalytic ideas to policies for treating young offenders at the institution he supervised, they had uncaring or absent parents so they had failed to develop loving relationships
What did Aichhorn reject?
the harsh environments of young offenders’ institutions at the time and treated the children by providing a happy and pleasant environment that would make development of the superego possible
Is psychoanalysis effective?
nope!! Eysenck found 44% of psychoanalysis patients treated for neurosis showed improvement against 72% of patients treated by hospitals
most definitely won’t work for cirminals
What is the cost and abuse of psychoanalysis?
costly and time-consuming so never been used on a large scale for treating criminals
psychoanalysis can give the power to define what is normal or abnormal
homosexuality= abnormal according to Freud which leads to abuse
