what was SALT1
strategic arms limitation treaty - superpowers agreed to limit number of nuclear weapons they had - bombers and missles
what were the effects of SALT1
- slowed down arms race bc limited number of weapons each side could have
- led to further negotatiation = SALT2
- made sure neither side had an advantage
pros to the Helsinki conference
PROS
- helped usa and SU form a stable realtionship - trade cooperation of oil and wheat
- both accepted each others religions/culture/language
- shared sicentific knowledge
what was SALT2
each superpower limited to 2250 warheads (whereas salt1 limited missiles and bombers)
why di SALT2 fail
- west germans opposed
- ## USA though it was making them too weak
Reagan changaes in attitudes and conditions of the SU
- he made no efforts to restart detente again
- he started arms race again
- called SU and evil empire
- usa put money into developing new missiles and the SU couldnt keep up
- SU war in afganistan
- awful living conditions
Reagans change of heart
- summit meeting in geneva - november 1985 and got on well
- public against cold war
- margret thatcher uk PM good frien of regean and said that Gorbachev was a good man to do buisness with
- this led to no war an better realtions
what was Gorbachev like as a leader
- knew economy was failing and ppl unhappy so wanted stronger socialism
INF treaty
stood for intermediate-range nuclear forces
- got rid of all nuclear missiles with a 500-5500km range
background to the Afghanistan invasion by the SU
- 1968 SU sent tanks to cechz to put down prague spring and usa didnt like this but didnt do anything abt it
- 1979 SU sent troops to afganistan - that had a communist govenment - to take control after president assasinated but this time USA were very very angry
what happened during the soviet invasion of afganistan and usa reaction
- afrganistan boardered SU
- during civil war the communist leader got killed and replaced by a leader who SU though didnt want to do communism as much
- therfore the su invaded
- this worried usa bc they were getting more control of middle east and then if they got control of iran ans then they wouldnt need oil an this would badly effect the usa
what was the carter doctrine
Jimmy Carter (new usa president)
- he threatened to use force against the su if they attempted to control the Persian Gulf
- cut off trade with SU so they couldn’t get grain and usa couldnt get oil from each other
- USA and Allies secretly helped Afghanistan
what did the soviet invasion of Afghanistan result in
- carter doctrine

what were the Olympic boycotts
- usa boycotted (withdraw) olympic games in Moscow 1980 in retaliation to SU invasion of Afghanistan
- then SU did this to the LA olympics in 1984
about SDI - star wars
- too risky to start a nuclear war btwn SU and USA cz whole world would explode
- but reagan wanted to win cold war so launched SDI known as Star Wars in 1983
- this was a plan to have stallites, lasers and mirrors in sopace that would destory the su intercontinental nuclear missiles before reaching the usa
- this lead t very bad realistion bc su thought it broke the outter space treaty and gave them a huge advantage
