Q

where in the bible do we hear about gender roles?

A

Luke 10:38-42 = Jesus tells Mary, who he is teaching that she has chosen the better lot, while her sister Martha is gently chastised for engaging in domestic tasks. Jewish rabbis did not teach women, so Jesus’ actions in both accounts are well outside the cultural norm

A

women are still judged on the way that they look and dress e.g. attractive/blonde/unintelligent connection etc.

17
Q

what is the pay gap?

A

despite the Equal Pay Act of 1970 women are still paid om average between 15% and 20% less than men, taking time off to have and care for children has been identified as a contributory factor

18
Q

what is discrimination?

A

it is when someone receives less chances than someone else because they are different, for example in the workplace women might be overlooked for promotion or not be given certain jobs because they are at the childbearing age

19
Q

how are women stereotyped?

A

women are often stereotyped in terms of personality traits, roles, hobbies, for example if the like the colour pink, or ballet, or if they are sensitive

20
Q

how are men stereotyped?

A

the are stereotyped on interests, for example if they like the colour blue, or if they are into football or sport

21
Q

what can stereotypes lead to?

A

prejudice and unfair discrimination, for example, women still face discrimination in the workplace

22
Q

why would some christians support gender equality?

A

-women deserve an equal in role in the church because they have the qualities needed to play an important part in the church,
-there are many quotes which seem to go against prejudice of any kind such as St Paul’s in Galatians. ‘There is neither Jew nor Greek, slave nor free, male nor female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus’
-Jesus had friendships with women which were very important such as Mary Magdalene who was the first woman to see Jesus after he had been resurrected,
-the story of Genesis could be seen as positive for gender equality as both men and women were created on the last day in image of God because they were both special.

23
Q

what might a christian say about gender equality being true?

A

that God created men and women equally as seen in Genesis 1, where humans are created on day 6, therefore there is no need for distinct roles within the church or family life

24
Q

what might a christian say about gender equality

A

in Genesis 2, although men and women are equal, they are different. women are seen as the helpers or companions to men. then in genesis 3 Eve is seen as a temptress and responsible for the ‘fall’

25
Q

why would some people argue that gender roles do belong in society?

A

because they do not necessarily have to be negative or stereotypical, and it would help people to know where they stand and give everyone a role to play in society

26
Q

why should men do jobs involving physical strength?

A

because it is a fact that men are generally stronger than women

27
Q

why should women take maternity leave?

A

because it is a biological fact that women bear children and breastfeed so it makes sense that they take maternity leave and stay at home to look after young children

28
Q

why might some people argue that men and women should have a choice as to their roles?

A

because they can have the exact same talents and abilities

29
Q

why might some christians not support gender equality?

A

-Christianity does not support gender equality because women are not able to reach the same level as males for example, in the Roman Catholic Church women are exempt from being priests,
-there are many quotes which seem to go against equality for women. In Timothy women are meant to be submissive in Church. ‘I do not permit a woman to teach or exercise authority over a man; she is to remain quiet’,
-the story of Adam and Eve could be seen as negative for gender equality as Eve is seen as the Temptress who causes the Fall of humankind.
