her husband, lord darnley was married and many thought she was responsible. she quickly married the earl of brothwell.
when was the imprisoned and where? and when did she flee and where?
in 1568 she was imprisoned at Lochlevel castle, and on the 2nd of may she fled to england.
what were the 3 main problems of mary?
she couldn’t give her to protestant lords in scotland as that risk upsetting other european rulers, as she was appointed by god. if she allowed mary to leave, she could join forces with france. keeping her in england would risk her becoming a catholic figurehead.
what did elizabeth do about mary?
she imprisoned mary and ordered an enquiry into darnels murder.

What was the aim of the Northen rebellion?
They wanted the duke of norfolk to marry MQS to make more tiers. they wanted MQS to be freed, and Elizabeth to make MQS her her. Northumberland wanted more power.
What did they do in the Northen rebellion?
On 9th of November they rang church bells backward signalling the start of the rebellion. om the 10th of nov they burnt and destroyed protestant prayer books in Durham Cathedral and held a catholic mass. they then wanted a fight but were retreated.
How did Elizabeth and her Privy council react?
They moved MQS further south to coventry so rebels couldn’t get there. Elizabeths army had 12000 compared to 4500 in the rebel army. 700 men were put to death, at least one from each village.
What were the religious causes for the Northern rebellion?
The earls wanted to bring back catholic mass, and bring catholicism back to England.
What were the economic causes for the Northern rebellion?
Elizabeth had taken land away from the earls and other nobles. Nobles were facing money troubles due to losing land. Northumberland lost land with a copper mine.
