Chemistry Flashcards
State what materials are made up of
Materials are made up of particles
State what is meant by a substance
A substance is made up of one type of material only.
List three factors that give a substance its properties
-What it’s particles are like
- how its particles move around
-how its particles are arranged
Name three states of matter
Liquid
Solid
Gas
Why can’t you pour a solid
Because it’s particles are tightly packed and do not move
Why can’t you compress a liquid
Because the particles are moving around and sliding over each other regularly
How can you compress a gas
Because the particles are spread out across the space and do NOT touch
Name two states involved in freezing
A liquid because this is what before you freezer it and a solid because this is your end result
Describe how particle movement changes when a substance melts
The particles while they are in a solid are tightly packed and can not move ,they start to get more and more energy and the particles start to move this is called melting, the particles then start to move in the state of a liquid so the solid has melted
The change of state from a solid to a liquid is melting/freezing
Melting
As a substance melts the particles vibrate slower/faster
Faster
When a substance has melted it is in the solid/liquid state
Liquid
The melting point of a substance is the temperature/speed that it melts at
Temperature
What is the difference between melting and freezing
-melting is when particles are changing from the solid state to the liquid state
-freezing is when particles are going from the liquid state into the solid state
Name the substance in the bubbles in a bath
They are Acctully gas because it is where the gas from the air goes into he bath and creates a bubble. This can also be happened when you fart in the bath the gas from your bum goes into the bath and creates a bubble of gas.
