Q

how is unrequited love shown through Rosaline?

A

instead of joy, Romeo is depressed as his love is unrequited. he uses oxymorons when we meet him such as ‘brawling love, loving hate’ representing the contrast between Romeo and Juliets love and the familial feud and foreshadows the amount of violence from the families-links with love and violence intertwined.

Q

what do romeos oxymorons show?

A

romeos inability to comprehend what is in front of him and his overall confusion on love in general alluding to romeos immature and inexperienced character and tendency to be impulsive. reinforced when Juliet says ‘too rash, too unadvised, too sudden, too like the lighning’ the asyndetic listing into the simile encapsulates romeos recklessness.

Q

when does the chaste religious imagery for r+j turn sexualised?

A

towards the end of the play. in some cultures sex is a way of consummating a marriage completing the unification of the couple. this couple is unified in death and the sexual imagery is symbolic of the consummation of their unity in death. this is shown as Romeo drinks from a round vial which was an allusion to female sexuality in elizabethan times. Juliet kills herself with a dagger, a phallic symbol which could be seen as representing re-consummating the marriage. this highlights their transcendental love and their death cements this eternal devotion.

Q

throughout the play love is seen as both physical and emotional. Where is this seen?

A

mercutio to Romeo about his unrequited love “love be rough with you, be rough with love” alluding to the sexual nature of love which is physical not pure.also shows love can be emotionally ‘rough’-rosaline. the friar shows his lack of emotional understanding when he says ‘‘young mens love lies not truly in their hearts but in their eyes’’ as he disregards love is form the heart. shakespeare shines a light on the superficial nature on love perhaps cloaking the who play in irony showing a fresh view on love contradicting the romantically idealised conventions of the time especially as FL also says Romeo was only ‘doting’ on Rosaline. Romeo and Juliets love however transcends the social conventions.

Q

what do Juliets oxymorons describing Romeo show?
‘beautiful tyrant’

A

shakespeare is commenting on superficial love as she describes the good parts of him as physical things or perhaps she is still in the sex orientated state of mind she was earlier. they may express the dichotomy of love while it his pure and ‘beautiful’ it can be the opposite.’bought the mansion of a love but not possessed it’ shows she likens the consumption of the marriage to possessing a mansion which could be referencing the objectification of women and instead of it being based on mutual affection its more transactional.

what does friar lawerences use of the oxymoron ‘violent delights’ emphasise?

A

the difference between the words but that there is a connection between them.’violent’ reflects the fighting in the novel and the verb ‘delights’ rather than love emphasises how violence occurs within the indulgence rather than the relationship.
