MAKING SOLUBLE SALTS Flashcards
1
Q
What is the EQUIPMENT needed?
A
Heatproof mat, tripod, gauze, beaker, bunsen burner, glass rod, spatula, conical flask, funnel, filter paper.
2
Q
Describe the PRACTICAL
A
- Start with a fixed volume of dilute sulfuric acid in a beaker
- Gently heat the acid until almost boiling
- Using a spatula, add small amounts of copper oxide to beaker.
- Stir solution - glass rod
- Solution will turn a blue colour as copper oxide reacts and DISAPPEARS.
- Keep adding copper oxide if the solution remains clear blue and then STOP ADDING if some powder remains after stirring.
- Use filtration to remove the unreacted copper oxide
- Place filtrated copper sulfate solution in an evaporating basin on a beaker full of boiling water ( on a bunsen burner set up) and heat gently.
- Heat until half of the solution remains
- Leave solution for 24 hours in a cool place for crystals to form
- Scrape copper sulfate crystals onto paper towel and gently pat dry.
3
Q
Why is the sulfuric acid a LIMITI(NG REACTANT?
A
Acid will run out.
4
Q
Why will some copper oxide start to NOT REACT?
A
Reaction has stopped, and all the acid has reacted - copper sulfate solution has been produced.
