Cells and tissues Flashcards
What is Oil red O?
An oil soluble dye
Only works on frozen tissue
What are the basic tissue types?
Connective
Muscle
Epithelial
Nerve
What are connective tissues derived from?
Mesoderm
What are the 2 types of connective tissues?
Proper connective tissue
Specialised connective tissue
What is the extracellular matrix composed of?
Ground substances (water, minerals, glycoproteins)
Fibres (protein filaments made by fibroblasts)
What are the types of proper connective tissue?
Loose connective tissue
Dense connective tissue
What is loose connective tissue made from?
Cells (fibroblasts, adipocytes, lymphoid)
Extracellular matrix
When does adipose tissue form?
If/when the adipose cells in loose connective tissue accumulate fat
What does adipose tissue do?
Insulates and cushions internal organs and joints
Stores energy
What does cartilage do?
Protects and cushions bone where they meet to form joints
What are the types of muscle tissues?
Skeletal muscle
Cardiac muscle
Smooth muscle
What is epithelial tissue?
A thin layer of cells lining the surface of the skin and hollow internal organs
What are ganglia?
Groups of neuronal cell bodies located outside the CNS
How many layers does stratified epithelium contain?
2 or more
How many layers does simple epithelium contain?
1
