B5 - Immune Response Flashcards
What is an antigen?
A protein which triggers antibody production and an immune response.
What is an antibody?
Proteins synthesised by B-Lymphocytes in response to antigens
Describe clonal expansion.
B cells carry antibodies on their surface. When a B cell and an antigen attach, it enters the cell via endocytosis and the antigen is presented on the surface. T helper cells bind to these and stimulate the B cell to divide.
Which two cells can B cells divide into?
Plasma and memory cells
Where do B cells concentrate?
Liver and Spleen
Describe plasma cells.
Primary Immune Response
Survive only for a few days
Describe memory cells.
Secondary immune response
Live for decades
Will divide into more plasma and memory cells upon meeting the same antigen
