Ferns Flashcards
What is stomata?
Small adjustable pores located on the surface of leaves. They allow the exchange of CO2 and water between the leaf interior and the atmosphere.
What does pioneer species do?
They can form soil (decomposition) and prevent erosion (roots hold soil down)
What is carbon sink?
Years ago Ferns died and under conditions like heat, pressure and lack of oxygen formed coal beds. In this way greenhouse gasses are reduced
How is the opening and closing of a stomata regulated?
When the plant senses good conditions like bright light or high humidity, it’s stomata open. This happens when guard cells swell with water through the proses or osmosis.
What are the two types of vascular tissues ferns have?
Xylem and phloem
What is the xylem?
Is a vascular tissue and is composed of cells which are hollow and thick walled. They allow water and minerals through the plant
What is function of phloem?
Is a vascular tissue and Is a network of cells which transports solutions of nutrients and carbohydrates produced by photosynthesis
Ferns have underground cells called what?
Rhizomes, they anchor the plant to the ground and absorb water and minerals
Sporangia have a cell helmet which helps to release the spores, what is it called?
Annulus
