  • Intensive farming techniques tend to use
    • herbicides which may result in eutrophication
    • pesticides which can cause negative effects on the foodchain
  • Ethical issues associated with cruel treatment of animals in intensive farms
  • Natural habitats may be destroyed to maximise land available
  • Ecological issues with intensive farming include:
    * reduction in biodiversity in areas where large amounts of land are used to graze cattle (as only grass is grown so in effect it becomes a monoculture)
    * overgrazing can lead to soil erosion
    * large numbers of cattle produce large amounts of methane, a greenhouse gas

The carbon cycle

A
  1. Carbon is taken out of the atmosphere in the form of carbon dioxide by plants for photosynthesis
  2. Passes onto animals by feeding
  3. Returned to the atmospher as CO2 by plants, animals and micoorganisms through respiration
  4. Animals and plants die and do not docompose, the carbon in their bodies can be converted (over millions of years) into fossil fuels
  5. When fossil fuels are burnt (process called combustion), carbon combines with oxygen and CO2 is released into atmosphere
    1. Increased use of fossil fuels increases carbon emmissions
    2. Mass deforestation and the reducing number of producers also increases carbon dioxide in the atmosphere

  • Forest habitats have a huge range of biodiversity and as habibats are destroyed is causes the loss of animals and plants
  • Many of these species are only found in these areas and will becom extinct

How does deforestation lead to soil erosion?

A
  • Tree roots help stabilise the soil, preventing erosion by rain
  • Trees will also take up nutrients and minerals through their roots
  • Without trees, nutrients and minerals will be unused and the soil will be washed away into rivers and lakes by rain (leaching)

How does deforestation lead to flooding?

A

Without trees the topsoil will be loose and unstable so will be easily washed away by rain, increasing the risk of flash flooding and landslides

  • The removal of trees and flora means less carbon dioxide is removed from the atmosphere by photosynthesis
  • Burning trees also releases carbon dioxide (combustion) and contributes to global warming

* Lack of sewage treatment plans in inhabited areas (due to poor infrastructure/lack of money) meaning seqage runs into streams or river

Effect:
* Procides a good source of food for bacteria which increases rapidly
* This depletes oxygen dissolved in the water and causes death of aquation organisms - eutrophication

* Chemicals such as heavy metals like mercury can be released from factories into rivers and oceans
* Or leach into land surrounding factories

Effect:
* Many heave metals are persistent and don’t break down
* Build up in food chains (known as bioaccumulation), poisoning the top carnivores

* Much rubbish consists of plastic that is either discarded or burried in landills

Effect:
* Much rubbish is non-biodegradable and remains in the environment for hundreds of years
* Animals eat it as it breaks into smaller peices and can get into food chains this way

Process of eutrophication

A
  1. Excessive nutrients from fertilisers run-off from the land into water
  2. Aquatic plants flourish, growing rapidly
  3. Algae also show rapid growth
  4. Algal bloom prevents sunlight from reaching aquatic plants so water oxygen levels fall
  5. Decomposition rate increase - aerobic respiration of decomposers reduces dissolved oxygen further
  6. Death of organisms requiring dissolved oxygen in water
