A small-scale version of the experiment/questionnaire/observation that takes place before the real investigation is conducted.

What is the purpose of pilot studies?
A
To ensure operationalisation of variables is appropriate, make sure questions/instructions are understood, know is the method is practical to upscale and see if observational categories make sense and are understood by observers
