Benign breast lesions Flashcards
Fibroadenoma
Benign breast tumour consisting of interlobular stromal and glandular epithelial cells.
- Well circumscribed, non-encapsulated, does NOT infiltrate parenchyma of breast.
Epidemiology: Young women < 30
Presentation: Well-defined mobile solitary mass
Investigations: FL: Breast imaging (USS < 30 or mammogram > 30)
- USS = smooth, well-circumscribed mass with uniform hypoechogenic appearance
- Mammogram = distinct, well-circumscribed mass
Management: None
Fibrocytic disease
Spectrum of conditions causing fibrous and/or cystic change within the breast
Epidemiology: 30-50 years
Presentation:
- Bilateral diffuse, symmetrical lumpiness
- Mastalgia - often cyclical
- Sometimes nipple discharge
Investigations: FL: Breast imaging
- USS = Cysts/solid mass
- Mammogram: Circumscribed density
Management: FL: simple analgesia e.g. paracetamol, ibuprofen
Intraductal papilloma
Benign tumour of the breast ducts
- Classically presents as bloody nipple discharge in a premenopausal women
Phyllodes tumour
Fibroepithelial tumour similar to fibroadenoma which is usually benign but can be malignant
- Characteristic LEAF-LIKE architecture on histology
Fat necrosis
Inflammation of adipose tissue often as a result of trauma
Mammary duct ectasia
Chronic inflammation and dilatation of subareolar ducts due to stasis of secretions
- Periareolar mass with green/brown nipple discharge in a postmenopausal woman
