alpha adrenergic agonists
A
name: “rine” epinephrine, noreppinephrine, ephedrine
indication: cardiac arrent, shock, hypotension, control bleeding anaphylaxis, nasal decongestant
action: activates the alpha receptors of the sympathetic nervous system (fight or flight) resulting in vasoconstriction, pupil constriction
nursing considerations:
- adverse effects include hypertension, tachycardia angina, hyperglycemia, necrosis of drug extravasates
-drug interactions with MAOIs, TCAs, and alpha or beta blockers
-ephedrine/phenylephrine have local effects of vasoconstriction used in nasal sprays for congestion
