The knee joint Flashcards
1
Q
What is the knee joint?
A
- A hinge joint.
- A sesamoid joint.
- A joint between the femur, tibia + patella.
2
Q
What are sesamoid bones?
A
- Increase the moment arm.
- Resist localised compressive stress in the muscle tendon.
- Located within the tendon of the muscle.
3
Q
What is the largest sesamoid bone in the body?
A
The patella.
4
Q
What is found on the patella?
A
Articular cartilage.
5
Q
What is the function of articular cartilage on the patella?
A
- Makes the patella slippery.
- So there is no friction between bones at the joint.
6
Q
What is located underneath the knee joint?
A
A bursa.
7
Q
What is a bursa?
A
- A fluid-filled sac.
- Lubricate the tendon so structures can slide over each other.
- Avoids inflammation.
- Reduces wear and tear.
