Q

discuss how thyroglobulin is made

A
  • Synthesis of thyroglobulin in follicular epithelial cells – secreted to follicles
  • Resorption, diffusion, oxidation of iodide – follicular epithelial cells active transport iodide into cytoplasm from bloodstream catalyzed by thyroid peroxidase
  • Iodination of thyroglobulin in the colloid
  • Formation of T3 and T4 by oxidative coupling reactions – t3 or t4 stays linked to thyroglobulin and stored in colloid
  • Resoroption of colloid – thyroglobulin degraded, leaving free t4, t3, dit mit
  • Release od t4 and t3 to circulation

Epithelial cells only t4, most t3 actually comes from conversion of t4 elsewhere in the body
