Why was regeneration needed?

A

-heavily bombed during WW2 so improvements were much needed
-a large 3 metre wall was constructed in 1952 to give greater security to the area/
-naval port jobs declined as a result of military cut backs leading to significant social and economic problems

What did the scheme involve ?

A

-2001-2001 10 years of funding from the new deal for communities initiative
-bottom up approach
-place related outcomes addressing crime, housing and community
-community related groups eg. Pembroke street estate management board
-dividing naval wall removed an interwar housing and flats demolished
-historical landmarks incorporated into the redevelopment

A

-physical appearance dramatically changed
-area and improved and benefits to local population shown by both qualitative and quantitative data sources
-sustainable as it was a bottom up approach
