why was Radio 1 created?

A

BBC previously had no radio station targeted at a younger audience, and had to create one because of the compulsory TV license

every household pays the licence so everybody should receive content suitable for their needs

in response to this, the BBC reorganised and renamed their radio channels, including creating Radio 1 to accommodate the changing attitudes towards music (the introduction of rock and roll, passionate music teenagers)

how was radio in 1967 different to radio today?

A

in 1967 radio had to be consumed at the time of the broadcast (live) whereas toady it is on demand, eg. on the KISS FM website audiences are able to listen to previous shows by streaming
- Radio 1 broadcasts were only available between 5:30am and 2:00am and could only play 5 hours of music per day due to ‘Needle Time’, however KISS FM broadcast 24 hours a day and have no limits on the amount of music they can play

- addresses them using informal language + colloquialisms
- presenters have a relaxed approached to the show, make it personal by mentioning their own lives , creates para social relationship
- fast paced holds younger audiences attention
- popular songs (chart music) appeals to mainstreamers

- show sponsored by Jet2Holidays - lower middle + working class would be interested in getting a bargain
ethnicity:
- diverse presenters (both mixed race) appeal to a range of races, are both British appealing to a British audience of all races
gender:
- both presenters men - male audience would be able to relate them and a heterosexual female audience may find them attractive, both presenters already known for winning BGT, audience may remember their dance group ‘Diversity’

A

A commercial interest - this effects the content of their radio shows eg. advertising
- However BBC Radio 1 do not have an interest in profit because they are a PSB (public service broadcaster) - they answer to the government and the UK public (who pay the TV license)

they:

- protect audience from harmful or offensive material
- ensures radio programmes appeal to a range of tastes

TV shows on after 9pm will contain adult content + explicit language
- TV shows can be watched on demand nowadays where there is nothing to prevent children from watching these adult shows
