Ebola?
Ebola Virus Disease EVD aka Ebola hemorrhagic fever is a rare and deadly viral infection most often in humans. Thought to be zoonotic.
When and where discovered?
in 1976 in former Zaire now the democratic republic of Congo near the Ebola river.
Types?
EBOV; formally Zaire, Sudan, Tai forest, Reston and Bundibugyo
RNA?
requires a host to replicate in the infected body.
animals that transmit animals?
Chimpanzees, gorillas, fruit bat, monkeys, antelope and porcupines found ill or dead.
Transmission from humans?
Contact with urine, saliva, sweat, faeces, vomit, breast milk and semen of a person who is sick with or has died from EVD
incubation period?
2 - 21 days, average 8 - 10
First symptoms?
Flu-like (joint pain, sore throat, fever, headache and muscle weakness
Second symptoms?
vomiting/ diarrhoea with blood, extreme fatigue, brain damage, bleeding from nose, mouth, and anus, coma, organ failure, shock, mass internal bleeding

Treatment?
isolation treatment centre, remain until cured or dead.
Effectiveness of intervention?
Mortality rates decline 20-60% due to isolation and safe burial practices
Vaccines?
rVSV-ZEBOV
Vaccine deployment?
2018-2020 outbreak in DRC helped control the spread
Recovery?
Good supportive care with IV or oral fluids
Ebola antibodies?
People who survive develop natural immunity for at least 10 years
Long term complications?
Chronic joint pain, visual and neurological challenges and hair loss
Body fluid/ prego women?
Semen, breast milk and pregnancy related fluids can have EVD in them for up to 9 months
