17 Flashcards
Describe the structures and functions of the circulatory system. (16 cards)
What two systems make up the circulatory system?
The Cardiovascular system and Lymphatic system
What are the three main functions of the circulatory system?
- Transports nutrients and other life sustaining resources around the body.
- Removes some waste products from the body
- Helps fight off diseases and infections.
What is the main structure of the circulatory system?
The heart
Describe the structure and function of the heart
Muscle that contracts and relaxes constantly in order to pump blood around the body. Blood moves from the heart, to the lungs, and back before being pumped around body. Contains 2 atria and 2 ventricles
Define Atria
the top chambers of the heart that RECEIVE blood.
Define Ventricles
the bottom chambers of the heart that PUMP BLOOD OUT (either to the lungs or around the body).
Describe the functions of cardiovascular system.
- Pumps blood throughout the body.
- The heart contracting and relaxing allows blood to move through the various blood vessels in your body.
Describe the double loop system of blood flow.
- first loop goes to the lungs and back to the heart
- second loop goes throughout the body and then back to the heart.
What is the main function of red blood cells?
responsible for transporting OXYGEN around the body.
Name and describe the three types of blood vessels.
Arteries: carry blood away from the heart. Thick walled and muscular blood vessel.
Veins: Carry blood back to the heart. Has thinner walls than arteries.
Capillaries: Tiny blood vessels where substances are exchanged between the blood and body cells. They also connect veins and arteries.
What is blood pressure?
The force with which ventricles of the heart contract.
Name and describe the 4 components of blood.
Red Blood Cells: Transport oxygen and carbon dioxide
White Blood Cells: Fight diseases
Platelets: Help wounds clot (scab over)
Plasma: the liquid part of the blood.
What is the lymphatic System and what is its main function?
a network of vessels that return fluid to the bloodstream from surrounding tissues.
What is lymph?
the fluid inside the lymphatic system
Why is lymph important for the body?
flows through lymph vessels which connect to lymph nodes
What are lymph nodes?
small nobes of tissue which filter lymph
