17.1 Flashcards
(31 cards)
What is the hub
Central part of the propeller which carries the blade
What is the blade
Aerofoil section that attaches to the hub
What is the butt
Base of blade where root ends
Waht is the blade root/shank
Thickened portion of the blade nearest to hub
What is the blade station
Distance mesaured from centre (in cm or in)
Define coarse pitch
The blade angle moves away from plane of rotation
Define fine pitch
The blade angle moves towards plane of rotation
What are the two components of force that operate on the blade
Thrust and torque that generate a resultant force
What varies the amount of air displaced
Pitch/blade angle
What changes in the revolution, when the blade pitch is changed
The distance travelled becomes more or less
What does alpha range mean
The blade pitch operates within the coarse and fine range
Define angle of advance
Measured angle from plane of rotation to relative air flow
What causes windmilling
Negative thrust and negative torque
When is beta range used
When on ground e.g. engine start and reverse thrust
What is required to move the throttle lever into reverse thrust
Lever must be lifted to clear detent
Why is the angle of indcidence varied on a propeller
To maintain angle of attack/thrust distribution (tip moves faster than root)
How do you calculate slip
Geometric pitch - effective pitch
Define geometric pitch
The distance a propeller should theoretically travel
What is thrust bending
The forward pushing force due to the thrust generated
What is torque bending
The rotational force that tries to bend the blade opposite to rotational direction
What is the aerodynamic twisting moment
The pressure acting on a blade that forces it to become coarser
How does centrifugal twisting moment work
The propellers mass tries is thrown out to the edge making it finer pitch
Where aer the highest vibrational loads found
80% of its length
What is blade solidity
The total area covered by the blade propellers
