Chapter 10 Cell Cycle Flashcards
What is the process by which a cell divides into 2 new daughter cells?
Cell division.
What are some difficulties a cell faces as it increases in size?
The larger a cell becomes, the more demands the cell places on it’s DNA. Also, a larger cell is less efficient moving nutrients and waste materials across the cell membrane.
What is asexual reproduction?
Production of genetically identical offspring from a single parent.
What is sexual reproduction?
Fusion of 2 separate parent cells. Offspring inherit some genetic info. From each parent.
What are chromosomes?
Genetic information bundled into packages of DNA.
Chromosomes form am association with histones, and this complex
Is known as ________.
Chromatin
Cells grow and divide in a process known as ______.
The cell cycle
In between cell division, has G1 G2 and S phase
Interphase
Division of the cell nucleus
Mitosis
Division of the cytoplasm
Cytokinesis
What happens during prophase?
During prophase, the genetic material inside the nucleus condenses and the duplicated chromosomes become visible. Outside nucleus, a spindle starts to form
What is a centromere?
Duplicated strands of DNA attach/meet in middle there
Each strand in the duplicated chromosome is a _______.
Chromatid
Spindle fibers extend from a region called the centrosome, where tiny paired structures called ______ are located.
Centrioles
What happens during metaphase?
The centromeres of the duplicated chromosomes line up across the center of the cell. Spindle fibers connect the centromere of each chromosome to the 2 poles of the spindle.
