What is the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms?
A legal charter that outlines the rules of how Canada operates

What are our FUNDAMENTAL FREEDOMS?
- Thought, belief, opinion, expression
- Coscience and Religion
- Association
Why do we have FUNDAMENTAL FREEDOMS?
They ensure that Canadians are free to create and express their ideas and opinions
What are our DEMOCRATIC RIGHTS?
- Right to vote over age of 18
- Right to run for public office over age of 18
Why do we have DEMOCRATIC RIGHTS
So we have a say in how our government and country will run
What are our MOBILITY RIGHTS?
- Right to enter, stay in, and leave Canada
- Live in any province
Why do we have MOBILITY RIGHTS?
They allow us to explore our country and live and pursue how we want
What are our LEGAL RIGHTS?
- no one can search you, take away your personal belongings or access your personal information without legal reasons
- Detention or imprisonment (government officials cannot take individuals into custody or hold them without a good reason.)
Why do we have LEGAL RIGHTS?
it is important that people be protected against legal overreach searches, arrests, or detainments
What are our EQUALITY RIGHTS?
- everyone has the right to equal protection
- everyone has the right of benefit of the law without discrimination
Why do we have EQUALITY RIGHTS?
everyone in Canada is considered to be equal and people be treated fairly and given equal opportunities
Explain the OFFICIAL LANGUAGES of Canada and what the Charter says about them.
English and French are Canadas official languages, the charter says that they both have equal status, rights and privelleges in the Parliament and gov. of Canada
IMPORTANT: What are our MINORITY LANGUAGE EDUCATION RIGHTS?
citizens have the right to have their children educated in French or English if any of the three situations apply:
A parent’s first language is the minority language
A parent received their own primary education in the minority language
A parent has a child who received or is receiving education in the minority language in Canada
Explain the Québecois collective consciousness:
when the people of a nation focus more on their identity as a group rather than their identities as individuals
What was the Quiet Revolution in Québec?
Francophones wanted both economic and political change because of the opportunities for Anglophones to dominate Québec, so Jean Lesage used his role as Premier to make reforms aimed at reversing the economic and political leadership of Québec
What were the 4 main reforms of the Quiet Revolution?
- Modernization of Québec’s industries
- Nationalization of the hydroelectric industry

What was the Royal Commission on Bilingualism and Biculturalism of 1963? What was the result of this commission?
Prime Minister Lester B. Pearson set up the Royal commission on Bilingualism and Biculturalism (RCBB) to help respond to the growing separatist movement in Quebec
What was the Front de Libération du Québec (FLQ)? What was their vision/belief?
a terrorist group that supported an independent & socialist Québec, they thought that Québec must remove itself from capitalism and Anglophone control through armed violence
What was one of the first terrorist acts of the FLQ?
placing bombs and molotov cocktails in mailboxes outside of federal armories and at federal sites.
What was the October Crisis? (What did the FLQ do, what were their demands?)
the FLQ kidnapped British Trade Commissioner James Cross and gave 4 demands that had to be met within 24 hours to release Cross. They were $500,000 given to the FLQ, Release all 23 FLQ members who were in prison, Broadcast and publish the FLQ manifesto, Give safe passage to Cuba or Algeria.
How did the government respond to the October Crisis?
the government rejected the FLQ’s demands but said they would be willing to negotiate
What is the War Measures Act and why was it enacted during the FLQ Crisis?
It gave the government powers to maintain security & order during “war, invasion, or insurrection”
