18- atom Flashcards
(15 cards)
Equation for total energy of particle:
Etotal= Erest + Ekinetic
Etotal=γmc^2
Define quark:
A fundamental particle: the building block for protons, neutrons and other particles
Quark list
Up, down,antiup, anti down
Charge on up quark?
+2/3e
Charge on down quark?
-1/3e
What is a gluon?
The exchange particle that mediates the strong nuclear force.
What is the strong nuclear force?
A fundamental force that holds nuclei together.
What is an antiparticle?
The counterpart to a particle with opposite charge (if it’s charged) and opposite spin. Equal rest energy, and lepton number.
What is a lepton?
Fundamental particles that interact through a nuclear force called a weak interaction. Electrons are a lepton. Weak interaction is responsible for beta decay.
What are Hadrons?
Composite particles (made up of quarks) that interact through the strong interaction.
List the 4 leptons you need to know:
Electron, positron, electron neutrino and anti electron neutrino.
How are positrons emitted?
Through beta plus decay.
example of creation of antiparticle pair?
Gamma ray photon producing an electron and positron.
What happens during beta minus decay?
neutron decays into a proton and electron, antineutrino also released.
