1.8: Balancing Chemical Equations Flashcards
(6 cards)
1
Q
Steps of Balancing
A
NEVER CHANGE CHEMICAL FORMULA
Only ADD coefficients
2
Q
Order of Balancing
A
- Start balancing with METALS
- Then NON-METALS
- Leave oxygen and hydrogen until the end
3
Q
What to do if there is an odd number for coefficient?
A
When there’s an odd number, you can put a .5 on a singular element
Then, multiple all coefficients by 2
(ex. 9.5O2 → 19O2)
4
Q
What must be included as subscript beside ionic charges in chemical equations?
A
STATE symbols
- Solid = s
- Liquid = l
- Gas = g
- Solution = aq
5
Q
What are multiplied?
A
- subscript outside bracket x subscript inside bracket
- coefficient x subscript
6
Q
How to count atoms?
A
Subscript represents how many atoms
N2 = 2 nitrogen atoms
(PO4)3 = 12 phosphate atoms
