18.2 Linking Glycosis and the Krebs Cycle Flashcards
(14 cards)
What is the 2nd stage of respiration called
link reaction
What are the structures within the mitochondria
cristae
matrix
inner mitochondrial membrane
outer mitochondrial membrane
mitochondrial DNA
inner membrane space
Function of cristae in respiration
-increase the surface area avaliable for oxidative phosphorylation
Function of intermembrane space in respiration
-proteins are pumped into this space by electron transport chain
-space is small so concentration builds up quickly
Function of matrix in respiration
-contains enzymes for the krebs cycle and the link reaction
contains mitochondrial DNA
Function of outer mitochondrial membrane in respiration
sperates components of mitochondrion from rest of cell creating a cellular compartment which is ideal for respiration
Function of inner mitochondrial membrane in respiration
contains electron transport chains and ATP synthase
What is the offical name of the ink reaction
oxidative decarboxylation
Where does the link reaction take place
matrix of mitochondria
How does pyruvate enter the mitochondria matrix
By active transport through carrier proteins
What are the steps of the link reaction
- pyruvate is actively transported into the matrix of mitochondria by specific carrier proteins
- pyruvate undergoes oxidative decarboxylation, carbon dioxide is removed along with hydrogen atom removed which are accepted by NAD to form NADH to form acetyl (2C)
- Acetyl is bound to coenzyme A to form acetyl coenzyme A which delivers the acetyl group to the Krebs cycle
What is the CO2 that is removed used for
-diffuse away and be removed from organism as metabolic wastage
-may be used a raw material for photosynthesis
What are the products of the link reaction
-2 acetyl
-2 CO2
-2 NADH
What is the NADH produced used for?
in oxidative phosphorylation to synthesise ATP
