Samuel Johnson on Hamlets behaviour
“treats Ophelia with so much rudeness… useless and wanton cruelty” - not a tragic hero.

“Hamlet is an instrument rather than and agent.” - allows himself to be effected by circumstance.
Johnsons further view on hamlets delay
Hamlet has no part in organising the fencing match resulting in Claudius’ death. He is instrumental.

there is “no adequate cause” for Hamlet’s madness as his actions are such of someone with complete sanity.
