Causes of the Spanish War
Cuban revolt against Spain and their horrible treatment got American Sympathy
Yellow journalism increased this
Rumors that Spain had sunk the U.S.S. Maine
DeLome Letter (from a Spanish diplomat) said bad things about the president, Americans were mad
Spain had a death grip around its remaining colonies
Problems after the Spanish War
Technically a short and “splendid little war”
however the Philippines war is much worse and follows this one
US soldiers had been in very poor conditions, disease was rampant, their clothes were wool in tropical heat, they were eating food older than them
but in the Treaty of Paris we gained Puerto Rico, Guam and the Philippines so yippee!
Platt Amendment says that the US won’t “own” Cuba but will have influence
Anti-imperialists
People who think Americans should be for self-determination and independence like in the beginning
but were also racist and thought Filipinos would take jobs away from Americans
U.S. Acquisition of Hawai’i
Sugar farmers in Hawai’i want to sell to the mainland US without Tariffs- they overthrow their Queen and ask to be annexed even though she was super chill and they would regret it later
The Philippines War
a long and brutal Guerilla War in the jungle
heavy casualties on both sides, prisoners were executed which was a big no no
it was often unclear who was the enemy, since Guerillas often hid with civilians, and some civilians were helpful or hated the US so you could never tell
Eventually the US wins - the people are promised that they will get their independence eventually, but the US will “modernize” them and get economic stakes there first
Filipinos got more education and infrastructure, and we got major bases and raw materials.
Emilio Aginaldo
leader of Filipino insurgents- goal was independence. Eventually he was captured and that is around when the war ended
Zimmerman telegram
