Role of Medsafe and Pharmac

A

Medsafe - (medicines or medical devices that have a therapeutic purpose)
Safety of drugs before, during and after they are made registered
-controls what is available and how
-classification of medications
-education and information

Pharmac - Decides what medicines to fund (subsity of mediciens in hospitals) , promotes best use of medicines
-sometimes government will fund for certain people - if they have something wrong - GP can look into this

A

If want to prescibe a medicine that is not on list, then can email medsafe and inform patient

What do if suspect an adverse drug reaction

A

CARM - center for adverse reactions monitoring

  • report to this
  • record patientt details and medicine details, fill out form and retern

-then carm will use this data to see if reactions are consistant with evidence - undertake risk-benefit assessments to see if action is required (removal of medicine if causing harm)
